NHRC steps in after homeless toddler raped in Kolkata, demands report from State

A two-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Kolkata on the night of December 7, 2024, while sleeping beside her homeless parents on Bidhan Street, under the jurisdiction of the Burtolla Police Station. The child was reportedly abducted from the spot where her family had been resting on the pavement. Medical examinations confirmed that the child had sustained injuries to her private parts, indicating sexual assault. Following the incident, the family filed a complaint with the Burtolla Police, leading to an investigation.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of the case and demanded a detailed report from the West Bengal government. The NHRC has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) and Chief Secretary (CS) to submit the report within two weeks. The report must include information on whether a formal case has been filed, the child’s current physical condition, the support provided to the family, and the steps taken by the authorities in response to the incident.

According to the NHRC, if the allegations are proven true, it would signify a serious lapse in law enforcement, especially in protecting vulnerable communities such as homeless families. The Commission has also questioned the overall law and order situation in the state and called for urgent action to prevent similar incidents in the future. The authorities have been asked to provide a comprehensive update on the investigation’s progress and any legal measures taken in the case.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of homeless children, who often face increased risks of violence and exploitation. As investigations continue, authorities are working to identify the perpetrator and determine the circumstances surrounding the crime.
